The export of goods to the United States has decreased by 9.2 percent in the five months of July-November compared to the previous fiscal year, amounting to $3,640 million. The export to Germany, the highest income-generating country in the EU and the second-largest export destination after the United States, has also collapsed by 15.68 percent in the same period, amounting to $2,446 million. While there has been positive export growth in Italy so far, it turned negative in November, with a 67 percent decrease in the export of goods in the July-November quarter. Belgium, another major destination in the EU, witnessed a 10 percent decline in exports during the same period. Despite Bangladesh enjoying duty-free access to EU countries, the decline in exports to major markets like Germany and Italy is causing concern. The overall decrease in exports from these major markets is impacting Bangladesh's overall export earnings, leading to concerns among businessmen. Some attribute the decline to perceived hostilities between the Bangladesh government and these export markets. The recently announced labor policy by the U.S. President is also a significant concern, as highlighted in a letter from the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, suggesting potential trade embargoes. To address the situation, the Ministry of Commerce in Bangladesh held a meeting with representatives from business organizations involved in exports. They plan to present the progress of Bangladesh's labor sector to diplomats from the United States and the EU. However, skepticism exists regarding the effectiveness of these initiatives in avoiding potential bans. Concerns are raised about the intensification of the problem as the country approaches elections, with potential consequences for the export income, overall economy, and the well-being of the people in Bangladesh.
